Civilian Response to Shortly after the war in Iraq began, a small band of Chicagoans, concerned about the Bush administration's insistence that Iraq 's Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) were an imminent threat, began to ask the question: Where are the Weapons of Mass Destruction? Leaving jobs and saying goodbye to families, they formed the United Neighbors Special Commission on Unconcealed Missiles (UNSCUM) and pledged to rid the United States of the deadly threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Unlike the Bush administration's approach, relying on Polaroids taken from outer space or exaggerations offered by shadowy figures seeking political favors or monetary compensation, the brave members of UNSCUM search for WMD using Midwestern pragmatism. They are on the street combing through dumpsters, digging in newspaper boxes and doing the obvious: asking people if they have Weapons of Mass Destruction. |

In September 2003, UNSCUM set out on its inaugural search for Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. As Rudolf Blixen, Chief Inspector of UNSCUM , told the gathering crowd, “If WMD cannot be found in the Middle East, surely they can be found in America 's Midwest.” UNSCUM is confident that these dangerous Weapons of Mass Destruction will be found. Their confidence comes from the well-known fact that the United States stockpiles more than 10,000 nuclear missiles and maintains the World's largest and most advanced biological and chemical warfare programs. With UNSCUM on the streets, Americans can rest easier at night, knowing they are closer to being WMD free. |
